Using organic fertiliser in the vineyard is the culmination of sustainable viticulture.
30 March 2022Sprouting, the green resurgence of life
4 May 2022We are very pleased to announce two new additions to our portfolio of Palacios Vinos de Finca wines: a single varietal white maturana and single plot aged in barrels from Bodegas Nivarius, and a Gran Reserva 2012 made with Tempranillo grapes from old clones from Bodegas Proelio. Two wines for ageing that are representative of the terroir of the Rioja sub-region where they were born.
NIVARIUS FINCA LA NEVERA 2017: IDENTITY AND ORIGIN
Finca la Nevera is one of Nivarius' most emblematic vineyards (it is the origin of the winery's name). It is so called because there used to be an old icebox, a well where ice was stored in the Moncalvillo area.
In our eagerness to know the terrain and seek the maximum expression of white maturana in the DOCa Rioja, we carry out precision viticulture, studying the area in detail. In this way, we take care of the land by applying tailor-made agriculture, resulting in this varietal wine full of specific singularities.
Nivarius Finca La Nevera 2017 is a single plot wine with its own identity, a true reflection of the land where it was born: a blend of three types of soils that bring freshness, silkiness and longevity to the wine, giving us a very fine, elegant and delicate wine. The soil located in the first horizon is sandy and of degraded origin from colluvial rocks; in the middle the sands are siliceous with silts full of calcium carbonates accumulated by washing; and at the bottom there is a light layer of clay that retains water.
The 2017 vintage was a complicated one, but we managed to respect the time of the vine and walk alongside it so that its fruit could express its full potential.
Fermented in French oak barrels and subsequently aged on fine lees to tame the grapes, it spent 36 months in stainless steel tanks, where it was periodically stirred to give it greater amplitude on the palate. The result is a fresh, aromatic and fruity single varietal, with hints of wild herbs and mineral nuances. Thanks to its ageing and finesse, it goes perfectly with vegetables and blue fish.
PROELIO GRAN RESERVA 2012: TRADITION AND TERROIR
Another jewel that sees the light of day is Proelio Gran Reserva 2012, a limited edition of only 300 bottles. A 100% Tempranillo selected from old clones in the area where they are born, in San Vicente de la Sonsierra's own vineyards called El Codo, La Peña, Cerro Las Espinillas and La Liende.
2012 was a textbook vintage in Rioja. Thanks to the dry and cool summer we had, we achieved optimum ripeness in the grapes and a spectacular state of health. This, together with the good weather conditions, gave us one of the best harvests in recent years.
Accompanying the times of the Tempranillo grape, we worked it gently in the cellar, allowing it to express its personality. Its ageing of 24 months in French oak barrels and a blending in concrete tanks for 6 months results in a Proelio Gran Reserva with character, very representative of the DOCa Rioja.
The earth is palpable in this long-aged wine, noticeable in its soft tannins with hints of chalk, giving it freshness, power and volume. Full of wild black fruits, balsamic aromas and hints of liqueur, it is ideal to accompany a hearty dish such as a game stew.
Both wines are now available in our online shop.
