PROELIO GRAN RESERVA

The perfect combination of tradition and terroir in this great wine made from the best grapes from one of the most extraordinary vintages of recent years.

DENOMINATION OF ORIGIN:
D.O.Ca Rioja

VINEYARD AREA
Bush head-pruned vineyards, at altitudes between 580 and 650 metres above sea level.

ESTATES
In San Vicente de la Sonsierra; own vineyards, El Codo, La Peña, Cerro Las Espinillas

SOILS
Poor very degraded deep calcareous silt soils with rocks of sedimentary origin on the surface. This type of soil offers us a fresh and full-bodied long ageing wine, with silky tannins reminiscent of chalk.

VARIETIES
100% Tempranillo wine, selection of old clones from the area.

WINEMAKING
Manual harvesting in boxes. Production with 20% of whole grapes selected and crushed in the traditional way. The rest is destemmed and crushed. Grapes are then fermented with their own yeasts from the vineyard. Cap of skins is punch down to have a better straction. Malolactic fermentation happens in 225L French oak barrels, with weekly battonage.

AGEING
24 months in French oak barrels. Coupage in a 4.000 litres concrete tank for another 6 months

ALCOHOL
14,5 %.

“A textbook vintage in Rioja in this new limited edition wine, with only 3.500 bottles that brings together the purest style of Palacios Vinos de Finca.”

Raúl Tamayo, Winemaker Proelio

La Esperilla, our battlefield One of our most significant estates is La Esperilla, a territory that has a sentimental significance for the winery. We look for unexplored lands to obtain different wines, and here, in the soil on which La Asperilla is based, legend has it that, like all of them, it has some reality and always a little imagination, that it was where the battle of Clavijo was fought, a battle that pitted King Ramiro I of Asturias against the Muslims, and that, in reality, could be a mixture of stories from various battles. But the importance of this estate for us is that it is here that we decided to bet on the red wines of Rioja, where we began to dream of making unique red wines that speak of that landscape at the foot of the Castle of Clavijo. The elaboration seen in another way Proelio's personality comes from the terroir; the character is refined in the winery. A simple space that is perfectly integrated into its natural environment. Large windows on the walls, which allow for work in which hardly any artificial light is used and therefore, a very environmentally friendly architecture. We only use oak vats, where extractions are carried out in the most respectful way by means of punching. Subsequently in traditional barrels to progressively increase the capacity of the tanks, until ending up in 2,000 litre casks. For the final assembly, the concrete tanks are reserved where the wine ends its journey.
