Lethargy in the vineyard: what happens when the vine sleeps?
17 February 2022Father’s Day Special. Palacios Vinos de Finca has the perfect wine for him.
11 March 2022The first weeks of the new year 2022 are being loaded with recognition and awards for the three wineries that make up Palacios Vinos de Finca.
Starting with the most recent news, such as the Rioja Special Report 2022, prepared by the prestigious critic Tim Atkin, who has awarded excellent scores to the wines of our two Rioja wineries: Bodegas Proelio and Nivarius.
The British master of wine has awarded 95 points to the new red wine Bodegas Proelio Puerto Rubio 2018 (95 points), a 100% Tempranillo from a single vineyard plot of the same name Puerto Rubio "singular vineyard of La Rioja", located in San Vicente de la Sonsierra.
The identification of singular vineyard recognises its exceptionality and gives due prominence to the terroir from which it comes. In the case of Proelio Puerto Rubio 2018, a plot of 1.63 hectares of 80-year-old vines planted at an altitude of 488 metres on hillside soils of calcareous gravel with degrading components and sedimentary origin, on the surface and with the presence of the bedrock at a depth of barely one metre, very degraded.
The vines come from a selection of old clones from the area, resulting in a wine that Tim Atkin describes as "long, chalky and concentrated, it's about minerality and freshness rather than oak, with subtle red nuances".
From Bodegas Nivarius, the first winery in Rioja to make only white wines, the Rioja Special Report 2022 also lists N de Nivarius Tempranillo Blanco 2020, this time with 91 points, describing it as refreshing and elegant.
"Less exotic than some interpretations of the variety, it is rough and stony with citrus and pink grapefruit flavours and a texture derived from the lees," said Tim Atkin.
The Tempranillo white grapes for this single varietal come from a site of north-facing vineyards at approximately 800 metres altitude in Clavijo, on clay soils, making an honest, fresh and round wine that shows the virtues of the variety.
Finally, Tim Atkin has rated Bodegas Proelio Viñedos Viejos 2018 with 93 points. No less than 60 micro-plots located in Badarán and Cárdenas, some of them dating back to 1910, make up the blend of this Garnacha from old vines. In Atktin's words "Full-bodied but refreshing, with very discreet oak, it is polished".
Best of Spain Top100
But the awards do not end here, as two wines from Palacios Vinos de Finca have been placed among the 100 Best Wines of Spain, according to the Best of Spain Top100 ProWein 2022, the most important international wine fair.
Two wines have been chosen to appear in this select list:
Pico de Luyas 2018, from Bodegas Trus (DO Ribera del Duero) and Nivarius Edición Limitad 2018, from Bodegas Nivarius (DOCa Rioja).
These awards obtained by our different wineries and with such disparate wines endorse the commitment of Palacios Vinos de Finca to pursue the best expression of the different terroirs that is subsequently transmitted to our wines.
An honest elaboration with the raw material to enhance its authenticity.
