The struggle for the expression of the territory

PROELIO

Proelio is our Riojan winery dedicated to showing red wines that express privileged territories. A commitment to preserving the old, high-altitude vineyards of different areas of Rioja. The plots that make up the soul of Proelio, "battle" in Latin, are small pieces of land that remain standing in their fight against extinction: garnachas, tempranillos or gracianos from old and wise vines, which produce fruit capable of building living, expressive and long-lasting wines.

At Proelio, we seek to produce wines with typical characteristics, from privileged territories that have been little explored. After a detailed study, we adapt each agricultural task to the requirements of each plot. We have our own top-of-the-range vineyards located at high altitudes, fresh sites of old vines that are worked with care to achieve wines that are inimitable, but at the same time, that speak of this Rioja. A raw material that is a real treasure, and as such is treated in the winery to make the wines.

Rioja is charged with a typicality that marks Nature and man interprets it.

Some reds that speak of the territory

PROELIO GARNACHA

A medium-bodied wine with an elegant cherry red colour and ruby red hues. Vineyards over 90 years old. The vineyards are located in the Alto Najerilla subzone, specifically in the municipalities of Cárdenas and Badarán, at an altitude of between 600 and 700 metres above sea level.

FINCA LA ESPERILLA

Bodegas Proelio originated from Finca La Esperilla, an iconic vineyard planted in 1974 using the traditional goblet method, where the red grape varieties of Rioja — Tempranillo, Garnacha, Graciano, and Mazuelo—are grown to produce a unique field blend wine. This type of wine is made from grapes of different varieties which
are planted together in the same vineyard.

PROELIO TEMPRANILLO-GARNACHA

A wine that speaks of the Sonsierra in Rioja Alta and Alavesa, of the landscapes of Alto Najerilla, Albelda de Iregua and the Moncalvillo slopes, a balanced combination of Tempranillo with small additions of Garnacha and Maturana.
Old bush vines and a traditional ageing process result in a wine that is fruity, lively and fresh, balanced and softly textured.

VIÑEDOS VIEJOS

A 100% Garnacha from 80-year-old vines and very old clones, grown in of small vineyards in the Alto Najerilla region with clay-ferrous soils in Cárdenas.
A structured, complex and aromatic red laden with dark fruit notes, which are characteristic of how Garnacha ripens in these soils. Unctuous, silky and complex.

Tasting notes

PROELIO GRAN RESERVA

The perfect combination of tradition and terroir in this great wine made from the best grapes from one of the most extraordinary vintages of recent years.

Bodegas-Palacios-Vinos-de-Finca-Rioja-Proelio La Canal del RojoLA CANAL DEL ROJO

Named after the eponymous vineyard, this red comes from 80-year-old Garnacha vines in Badarán. The soils contain depleted ferrous clay as well as angular colluvial stones on the topsoil. The old-clone vines are over 80 years of age and the wine is made with full clusters hence the character of the variety prevails.
La Canal del Rojo is thus a different wine —fresh, fruity, mineral, and transparent as it expresses Garnacha’s elegant side, with wild notes; aromatic and persistent.

Sourced from a vineyard at 505 metres above sea level in San Vicente de la Sonsierra, the wine takes its name from the site it is located on. The soils are primarily composed of depleted limestone in the subsoil and pebbles on the topsoil. Vines in Puerto Rubio are over 70 years old and for us, it is one of the finest vineyards in La Rioja.
Fresh, structured and complex, this wine is very aromatic, with silky texture and mineral notes. It is vertical and polished on the palate.

La Esperilla, our battlefield One of our most significant estates is La Esperilla, a territory that has a sentimental significance for the winery. We look for unexplored lands to obtain different wines, and here, in the soil on which La Asperilla is based, legend has it that, like all of them, it has some reality and always a little imagination, that it was where the battle of Clavijo was fought, a battle that pitted King Ramiro I of Asturias against the Muslims, and that, in reality, could be a mixture of stories from various battles. But the importance of this estate for us is that it is here that we decided to bet on the red wines of Rioja, where we began to dream of making unique red wines that speak of that landscape at the foot of the Castle of Clavijo. The elaboration seen in another way Proelio's personality comes from the terroir; the character is refined in the winery. A simple space that is perfectly integrated into its natural environment. Large windows on the walls, which allow for work in which hardly any artificial light is used and therefore, a very environmentally friendly architecture. We only use oak vats, where extractions are carried out in the most respectful way by means of punching. Subsequently in traditional barrels to progressively increase the capacity of the tanks, until ending up in 2,000 litre casks. For the final assembly, the concrete tanks are reserved where the wine ends its journey.
