Three wines from Palacios Vinos de Finca, among Tim Atkin’s ‘Wines of the year’.
21 February 2024Trus Albillo Mayor Reserva 2020, Lía Reserva 2017 and Nivarius Reserva 2016 join the Palacios Vinos de Finca family
8 April 20242024 will be a very special year for Palacios Vinos de Finca. Bodegas Trus, the first winery where we started and which gave rise to our group, will celebrate its 25th anniversary. A quarter of a century in which, from here, we have managed to produce wines that express the typicality of the Ribera, without stridency or excess.
Founded in 1999, it was baptised with the name TRUS in reference to the Earth, the Oak, the Grape and the Sun, essential for the production of wines that express the peculiarities of each vintage and that are capable of surviving in the bottle and gaining in ageing over the years. For us, Trus represents the origin of Ribera del Duero, where the vine expresses itself through the land that sustains it.
These words of Javier Palacios, founder of the group, help us understand his passion for wine and how he started out:
"Although my professional career did not start in wine, but in the meat industry, I was bitten by the bug during a trip to Burgundy and I decided, in a way, to look back to the land. To the vineyard. I decided to devote myself to a passionate job, that of searching for lands capable of producing unique, singular wines. Since then, 25 years ago, I have been pursuing this dream. Trus, in the Ribera del Duero, was the path along which I was introduced to wine. Paradoxes of life. I, a man raised among vines, with an attachment to the land and the Rioja wine culture, am part of an innovative project in Ribera del Duero... However, with time, everything fits together and the three wineries are now part of a single philosophy: to search for gifted territories to make unrepeatable wines, different from any other".
This château in the heart of Ribera del Duero is surrounded by more than 60 hectares of vineyards integrated into the landscape. The winery's estates are located in Piñel de abajo, Pesquera de Duero, Quintanilla de Arriba, Moradillo de Roa and Gumiel del Mercado, and it works with winegrowers from other areas of the D.O. such as Roa, Nava, La Aguilera, Peñaranda and Baños de Valdearados.
Wines with character, from extreme climates, high altitudes and fresh orientations, which are harmonised and fine-tuned after ageing so that the message is completely honest. Different and special elaborations, capable of blending with other wines and achieving a different expression or of forming a singular estate wine, with a unique language.
For this reason, Trus wines can be defined as classics, because an avant-garde look is the one that is directed towards the soil, preserving a typicity that comes from its deepest roots. Today, the whole Palacios Vinos de Finca team can boast and show the expression of these great terroirs, unique wines with an attachment to the land, to their origin, an interpretation of that magical combination formed each year by the vineyard, the climate and the grapes.
Launch of three new wines
To celebrate the 25th anniversary of our founding winery, Palacios Vinos de Finca, we present three new additions to our extensive family. They share the same objective that we seek in any of their "brothers": to obtain the best wines that can be obtained from each vintage and each soil.
Trus Albillo Mayor Reserva 2020, a wine for ageing that already shows us all its complexity and elegance. As Rafael García, oenologist at Bodegas Trus explains, "despite being a reserve wine due to its long ageing in the bottle, we must give importance to the variety and the expression of the soils where it comes from, giving it an ageing with little importance in wood and that it is the passage of time with its long rest in the bottle that makes the variety reach its maximum expression".
The next to join the Bodegas Nivarius family is Lía Reserva 2017, a new sparkling wine for which we have sought "creaminess above all else, opting for fine bubbles and roundness in the style of Champagne", says our winemaker at Bodegas Nivarius, Raúl Tamayo. We have made a selection of old-vine, goblet-trained Viura vineyards on the slopes of Moncalvillo and Sonsierra in La Rioja (between 500 and 700 metres above sea level); Garnacha Blanca from Clavijo (650 metres), for greater depth, and Maturana Blanca from our Finca Las Arcas estate in Nalda (820 metres) for softness and aromatics.
And finally, Nivarius Reserva 2016, our great white wine for ageing. It comes from goblet-trained Viura vineyards, with an average age of 70 years, located in Sonsierra, on the slopes of Moncalvillo and Alto Najerilla between 500 and 700 metres above sea level. As Raúl Tamayo recalls, "the 2016 vintage was a vintage of grapes with a lot of freshness and finesse, yet delicate at the same time".
Wines of the highest quality linked to our land and our territory.
Looking back, we can see that the road we have travelled over the last quarter of a century has given us the experience to better understand our soils and their influence on the different wine profiles we want to achieve. Experience has given us the know-how and a better understanding of each of the vintages to continue directing our work towards achieving the best wines that can be obtained.
For this reason, in the coming years we want to consolidate the winery as a reference point for the production of high quality wines linked to our land and our territory, the centre of everything.
