22 April 2022Knowing the terrain, the composition of the balance between plant, climate, soil and water with precision, helps to understand why the land and the grapes that grow in it express themselves in different ways. For this reason, at Palacios Vinos de Finca we study the plots in detail in order to be able to apply a measured and precise agriculture that results in the best possible wines for each estate.
For us, the soil is essential, as it will define the characteristics of the wine that comes out of that vineyard. A way of working that always seeks the best expression of the different terroirs, with the minimum intervention and an agriculture that respects biodiversity.
With this aim of achieving a more sustainable vineyard, for some time now we have been immersed in a process of total transformation of our fertilisation. We have begun to take the first steps by replacing mineral fertilisers with organic fertilisers. But despite the fact that this type of fertiliser, the most widely used in viticulture, is rich in nutrients and, above all, easier to apply to the vineyard, we finally decided to return to a traditional fertiliser model.
We started out using liquid organic fertiliser and pellets, although following our philosophy and obsession with the land, which leads us to practise sustainable and precision viticulture, we have now opted to use cattle manure from a Wagyu farm.
Respecting the environment and its people is our way of giving back everything it gives us. In this way, we close a sustainable circle of using a livestock waste.
The benefit we have found to this type of fertiliser, in addition to replenishing the micro and macronutrients we extract annually with the grape harvest, is that it improves the soil structure. It also increases the levels of organic matter, enriching the microbiota and regenerating increasingly lively soils.
At Palacios Vinos de Finca we apply this fertiliser once a year, as a maintenance measure. Winter is the best time of the year to carry out this task, as it penetrates the soil with the spring rains and is thus available when root activity and subsequent vegetative development begin.
Precision viticulture
The environment of Palacios Vinos de Finca is located in two regions, Rioja and Ribera del Duero. In the three wineries, Nivarius, Proelio and Trus, the team works with the same philosophy: to know the soil in depth in order to know exactly what wines will be obtained and which plants will best adapt to them. Precision viticulture in its purest definition.
Sustainable viticulture and a vocation for origin-linked wines are at the heart of everything.
The importance of the territory, of the soil as the protagonist of our philosophy also means that our efforts are focused on its protection. Natural conservation and sustainability are the fundamental foundations on which we base our daily work.
