Decanter rates the novelty of Nivarius Lia Reserva 2017 and awards it 94 points
24 June 2024At Bodegas Palacios Vinos de Finca, terroir is more than a concept; it is the soul of our wines. Our philosophy is centred on the belief that the true character of a wine is born from its soil. This idea guides every aspect of our work in the three wineries that make up our project:Trus, Nivarius y Proelioall located in the prestigious regions of Ribera del Duero and La Rioja.
Through sustainable and precision viticulture, we aim to create wines that are not only exceptional, but that authentically reflect the place they come from.
As our winemaker Raúl Tamayo explains, for us, terroir is the origin of everything. We understand terroir as the unique interaction between soil, climate, altitude and viticultural practices. That is why, at Palacios Vinos de Finca, we deeply respect this interaction, recognising that each vineyard has its own personality.
Our approach to precision viticulture allows us to map and analyse soils in depth, identifying high quality micro-terroirs that are ideal for producing exceptional wines. This methodology, based on detailed scientific analysis, is complemented by a deep appreciation for traditional techniques.
En Nivariusthe first winery in La Rioja dedicated exclusively to white wines, agriculture is practised in a respectful and sustainable manner. Here, part of the vineyard is kept covered with grass, a practice that harbours beneficial insects and essential nutrients, helping the plant to naturally defend itself against potential pests. This approach reflects our commitment to traditional viticulture and respect for the environment. For us, it is essential that wine production is in harmony with nature, because we believe that you cannot make an honest and authentic wine without caring for the environment in a natural and traditional way.
Another of the hallmarks of Nivarius is our dedication to defending the native varieties of La Rioja. We seek out the best terroirs for each of them, ensuring that each grape grows in the environment that best suits its nature. For example, our vineyards near 800 metres above sea level, in the highest reaches of the Iregua Valley, are a place that offers ideal conditions for growing the Maturana grape. Here, the cool climate, the northern orientation and the particular composition of the soils combine to create great white wines in Rioja.
The soil we chose for Maturana Blanca has a high percentage of sand and is located on a hillside at an altitude of 800 metres. These are soils with compact sandstone rocks that gradually disintegrate due to the action of water and ice, forming soils with great viticultural aptitude. Although they are not rich in water accumulation, they allow the grapes to express an exceptional freshness, a characteristic that defines the quality of our white wines.
También en Proelio we are dedicated to producing red wines that capture the diversity and richness of La Rioja's wine heritage. Our La Esperilla estate, the heart and soul of Proelio, is an exceptional terroir covering 20-25 hectares of vineyards. Traditional varieties such as Garnacha, Graciano, Mazuelo, Tempranillo and a little Viura cohabit here, grown in an environment that allows them to develop unparalleled freshness and longevity.
We firmly believe that altitude is one of the best ways to maintain freshness and complexity in our wines as climatic conditions change. A tool to fight climate change.
At Bodegas Palacios Vinos de Finca, the commitment to the terroir and the environment is unwavering. From the selection of soils to the final winemaking process, every step is guided by a deep respect for the land. We believe that only through sustainable viticulture and an authentic connection with the terroir can we create wines that are true transmitters of their origin.
Each bottle of Palacios Vinos de Finca tells a story. It is a pure expression of the land, the climate, the hands that work it, and the winemaking tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. Our wines are more than a product; they are a work of art that reflects the essence of our terroir.
